About Us

Hi! My name is Lakia Johnson, the founder and owner of BLK for hair with texture LLC. My desire to create this brand first came about in 2020 right around the start of Covid-19. During the initial start of the pandemic, New York had closed all "non-essential" businesses, and this included hair stores initially. I was a new mom and started to experience post-partum hair loss. Target became the primary place for all of my hair care needs. I quickly became frustrated with how minimal the "textured hair" section was at my local target. As a black woman, it was one of the few times that I had really thought about the fact that hair section for women of color was about a quarter of one side of the aisle. Meanwhile, the entire remainder of the aisle were filled with products that would not meet the unique needs of my curly/coily hair. I remember thinking, "people need to create more hair products for black women." Later I realized that it could be me who contributed to that need. It was important to me that I did not just add another product to our cabinets, but instead add a product that is made with high quality ingredients that I can actually pronounce. BLK (pronounced Black) for hair with texture was created with all natural, vegan and organic ingredients. Each ingredient was picked to nourish, repair and promote the growth of textured hair. It was also important to pay homage to black women and the beauty of black skin and hair, as well as the history and culture of black hair care.
